Gaze magazine

An independent magazine with a focus on aerial photography

The front cover of Issue 1.

Inspiring readers through aerial photography

Gaze examines the environment in which we live by observing the world from a height – a perspective different to everyday human experience – covering the latest aerial photographs, stories and discoveries, and interviewing aerial photographers. It sheds light on different locations, communities and cultures, aiming to build enthusiasm for travel and exploration of the outdoors. Ultimately, it is here to inspire. Aimed at photographers and keen explorers.

Deliverables

Deliverables included the visual identity and cover design, the design of Issue 1 and subsequent editorial template – including content selection and curation – and a document to pitch the magazine to retailers. The cover design, conceptualised for Issues 1–3, defines the identity of the magazine.

Identity & cover

The visual identity uses the typefaces Futura Passata and Epilogue. Futura Passata's variable width characters play on the fluidity of the subject matter: photography. The masthead encompasses this and is placed on top of the cover image as an outline, so that it does not detract from the photograph. A gloss varnish is applied over the masthead, mimicking a camera lens, whilst upping shelf presence and the ability for Gaze to capture reader attention.
