From the book to the streets

A journal about the history of large wooden and stencil type

The front cover. The letter ‘F’ is debossed to mimic the effect of real letterpress.

The cover and 41 inside pages were designed from the ground up. All copy was supplied and edited. The design process involved extensive consideration of format, layout, and typography in order to allow readers to read most comfortably and with ease. A grid structure was defined for the book and all content flowed in.

The cover includes proofing press prints of intriguing, large-scale wooden type from the University of Reading collection; the letters are of the period discussed in the book. Scans of the prints were arranged digitally to form the design.
